Performance Boost for computers

Machines ought to run much faster than they actually do, thanks to the new versions of applications and games. Technology is not only creating computers skinnier and attractive everyday but slower and messy, and cheap storage devices and heavy graphic applications add some beauty to the picture.

Here are some tips to examine your machine for basic health and performance to boost efficiency. These tips are intended for Windows users only.

  1. Things you should do before attempting any of the actions below:
    1. Create a system restore point.
    2. Back up the registry file.
    3. Back up all the important data.
    4. Ensure OS installation/recovery disk is handy in case you mess it up.
  1. Actions:
    1. Click on Start, Go to Run, type ‘MSCONFIG’, Go to start up tab,  un check all the programs that you do not want to be loaded everytime your machine pc boots up.
    2. Run a registry cleaner (eg. System mechanic), if you have any.
    3. Run the windows built in health check program.
    4. Update your windows (Windows automatic update).
    5. Go to My Computer, Un mount all the unnecessary network drives.
    6. Go to My Computer, Un mount all the unnecessary virtual CD/DVD drives (if you have installed any virtual drive applications like poweriso and magiciso).
    7. Desktop Cleaning: Remove all unnecessary short cuts. Organize all the data stored on the desktop and store it in appropriate folders on the drives.
    8. Go to Control Panel -> Uninstall all unnecessary programs, games and application that you do not need any more.
    9. Run a detailed disk clean up under system tools and regain the space.
    10. Under browser settings, Go to options, and delete cookies and temp internet files.
    11. Increasing the size of the virtual memory files (paging file) to increase the machine performance.
    12. Ensure your antivirus version and virus definitions are up to date.
    13. Run a full machine antivirus scan.
    14. Run a Disk defragmentation on the disk.
    15. Create a recent system restore point, if not already created, Delete all the archived restore points except the latest.
